K&N filter or Screamin' Eagle Stage 1?

Looking at the prices for the K&N filter of $79 versus the price from Jenny with
Shipping of a Screamin' Eagle Air Cleaner sytem for $121. A difference of $42...is it worth it to go to a more expensive system for a potential of minimal horsepower?

IF you're talking just the air filter element...

You'll get more from the K&N.

AND...

It'll last longer. Million mile guarantee on a K&N.

I got around 8400 out of my Squawkin Chicken filter, the rubber was half torn on the inside. I'm glad I checked it when I did, or that piece may have made it into the engine.

I was NOT impressed.

Switched to a K&N and from the seat of my pants, I think the bike pulls a bit harder and definitely sounds better.

Is your ECM flashed? or do you have a race tuner?

Just a stock FLHRC 08'. I cannot find the model filter K&N makes in any of the catalogs for my bike. K&N says it takes a HD-1508. I cannot find that filter anywhere other than the K&N site

Well...

Mine is (I think) a HD-0800....

When they do a SE Stage 1, they pull all the bullsh!t off the back of your air cleaner, leaving JUST the "ham can" with no plastic, and a round, traditional-style air filter.

To install THAT K&N may require a different backing plate, or mounting plate.

Hopefully someone steps up that knows a bit more than I do about it...

I had my Stage 1 installed before I picked the bike up, which entailed the air cleaner treatment I mentioned, the ECM "flash" or download, and a set of SE slip-on mufflers. If you don't use a race tuner of some sort, your ECM needs to be flashed so the engine doesn't run too lean.
NOT sure if it is necessary when just doing the air filter.

If you look in these pics, you can see there is none of that black plastic on the back of my AC cover, it's wide open...

I put a SE AC on my 07 August of 07. When I inspected it June of 08, the seal was crumbling, and fallign apart. POS.

My K&N SE AC from 04, is still in service. Face rsuted fast, I was unhappy about that, but seal still looks good. Onlythe outside, thats not getting sucked rusted. Not perfect, but I would rather shove a chickie up my pipe, then buy another HD air cleaner.

When will they stop fucing the customer?

Same months and symptom of mine. Well, my Stage 1 was done last Friday in July, 07.

Did you replace it with a K&N?

I repalced it with Drag. Was leaving the next day for ES. Indie by house said, K&N probably makes them. Dunno. Either way probably better then a HD one.

I had it in my tourpak, and went to the dealer, for something else. But its to the point why bother. Very dissapointed.

On another note. My 01, I replaced the button allens with another type of allen. Not button, deep so can get vice grips on if need be. The ones I got at the local hardware, were black, like impact grade, dunno the type. Probably higher grade then I needed, but at less then a buck, a piece I splurged.

The button allens after awhile, make my sphincter pucker.

According to several sources, because of the O2 sensors, the current ECM makes enough adjustments to compensate for pipes and air cleaner. American Iron says no ECM adjustment is needed until you get to serious changes.

I put the pipes & AC on my '06 Dyna... the experimental model phor the O2 sensors, and it ran extremely HOT with no ECM phlash. I still don't have the phlash, but I have a TFI instead.

N00dles Road Glide is an SE edition, probably already has the Stage one mods done.

Ness Big Sucker kit comes with K&N filter for around $100.00. Why fool with a cheap ass air filter from H-D?

PM me your address. I've got a K&N element that'll fit. I've only usd it for a few hundred miles. You can have it. It will make your engine breath better. It's washable too.
