10k service
Ok... Time for my 10k service.
I have the manual and can turn a wrench sometimes... I am trying to decide if I am going to do the service myself or take the bike in. I do my own maintenance and have a shop manual for the bike, but for some reason I am actually contemplating spending $400 to let a trained service guy do this. What do y'all think? If sh!t goes wrong on a motorcycle, then very bad stuff can happen. Does anyone have the 10k service check list handy? |

Its in the manual... usually chapter 1...
There is nothing but changing fluids and filter, adjusting and lubing cables, checking/bleeding the brakes, greasing the neck bearings, adjust belt and chain tensioning, and torquing things up... I'm a designer and I did it... no brainer really... You can do it... I was worried and bought the DVD "Fix My Hog" or something like that... watching someone do it helped me... If you get stuck, there are people here willing to help... With Doug's help and a lot of input from the fine folks here, I rebuilt my top end... |

You're more likely to do $400 worth of right than anyone else is.

And now that I think about it, I need to add cruise control... Add a decent set of fogs and there is my $400!
soooooooooooo, that means that by doing the work myself, I can justify that the cruise and fogs cost me nothing since I was going to have the service done... right??? (Go with me here) |

TJ...
Found your maintenance schedules.... Put it up as a sticky in this forum... http://www.doofclenas.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=141580 Harley has a page where you can enter your VIN number and mileage and it will give you the recommended service... A link for it is in the above thread. Mike 8 |

I see I need to replace the plugs. Hopefully people are still checking this thread as I would like some recommendations. I won't be fooled by "Platinum Spark Fancy Titanium Flux Series" marketing. Anyone? Anyone? |

I use champion RA8HCs, but that is just because I get them 2 miles from the house instead of going the 20 to the dealer. Have also used NGKs with no issues. I really don't think this is an issue worthy of much concern for a stock, or relatively stock, application.

Not on a bagger--have not reached that interval yet. I would say it is probably more tedious than complex.

fork oil at 10K? I think I missed that on mine.
Just checked 8's list.....fork oil gets replaced at 20K. I think I missed that one too On Edit: Just checked the official service manual for my 2007 Ultra, and it says inspect every 50K miles for the fork oil. I'm not real sure what that means, but I feel better now.

about the time I got there they changed it to 20K about the time I got there they changed it to 50K> I changed it at 40K and rest assured it was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay past due> Think KT found the same thing---oil was black, smelled burned, and there was about 4 oz in the right leg where there should have been about 11 oz> The oil in the left leg looked clean> No they had never leaked> Servicing the front forks is not difficult just a pain in the rear> |
