History of the Day

On this day in 1961, U.S. auto manufacturers announce the introduction of seatbelts as standard equipment for the 1962 model year. (Does anyone remember cars without seat belts, Scabby?)

I had a couple of cars without seat belts.........

But they were old cars, and I was very young.

Interesting. Glad they did it, sorry that the government eventually saw it as a revenue stream to force you to wear it.

Oh yeah. I had a 1955 Ford F-100 pickup that I restored while still using it as a daily driver to/from highschool. It had a simple off/on keyed switch for the ignition and a starter button to start the engine, too.

Engine wasn't the stock 6 banger, though....

I had some good times with that old truck.

First two car were - 58 Chevy and 61 Ford....nada seat belts. That 58 Chebby had a great front seat, no need to move to the rear seat...

2nd car was a 58 impala, got it from a salvage yard with a bad 348 for $15 All we needed in those days was an 8 track, good tires, and a heater, but it had seat belts too. Really cool cars.

My Dad had to install a center seatbelt in his '68 F-100 for me, it only had two.

Trucks did not have to have seat belts until later, they didn't need blinkers until 58. My dad had a 62 ford fairlane(same as a mustang without the fancy sheet metal on it) It did NOT have seat belts or a left side rear view mirror(he got a ticket for the mirror). I would think that the seat belts in 62 were installed (or not) by the dealer, like the side mirror should have. Although my father was a nuclear engineer, he wasn't very street smart. He traded in a 4 door pontiac that he really liked because my mom was afraid that we would open the doors will he was driving.

Any redneck knows that all you have to do is remove the handles from the inside.

You mean like the first car I remember, my dad's 1938 Plymouth Sedan. Or his next car, a 1951 Chevy. Or his next car, ............

In fact, first car with seat belts was his 1957 Ford Wagon that we retrofitted with seat belts.

and, for those chomping at the bit to comment on my age and the 1938 Plymouth, he didn't get that car until 1949 and we had it until 1955
