The clutch basket nut (1 1/8" LEFT hand thread lil' goober) backed off enough to allow the fine teeth of the tranny input shaft to shear. They start to to little by little, next thing...... ZING! No drive.

First thing I'd do is pull the outter primary, then pull the comp and clutch out. Inspect the spline teeth in the basket and on the input shaft.

If the primary chain went south, the noise it would make would scare the beejezzus out of you, and most likely bust the inner/outter primary cases when the chain bunched up. It would bleed primary fluid too.

It's just a thought, I could be wrong.
Agree don't think it is the primary chain, I started it after and could engage the clutch , something was spinning/humming.

I skimmed...

Do you have any gears at all???

Usually with a gear failure you will have
metalic sounds, not "a hum".

Maybe stripped the belt???
Could be you stripped the belt and the humming noise
is the drive gear rubbing on a smooth belt.

Maybe snapped the transmission input.
It wouldda had to snap clean....doubtful.

I dunno.

What would happen if the clutch adjuster nut fell completely loose and/or off the adjuster stud?

Would that strip the splines on the shaft?

I've never had one apart......

My guess would be the belt drive sprocket. I just changed one out for a friend last week. The splines wore completely out, the transmission output shaft simply spun inside the hole. It's not an uncommon problem for older motorcycles.

While I had it apart, I changed all the primary and transmission seals, quad o-ring, shifter shaft seal, etc. in addition to the shifter lever and the pulley/sprocket. It wasn't a big deal. Took me about 4 or 5 hours.
