Aftermarket Starters?

Anybody have any experience with All Balls starters? Put one on 3yrs ago with a one piece jackshaft and now the starter clutch sounds like it's just about toasted.
It's a 1.4kw unit and even new had a bit of a issue on hot starts but now it will give me 2 crap attempts even when cold, not always but enough to make me cringe. I didn't think a 95" with 204's and a little more comp. would need comp releases? Will check CCP. Harley want's $650 for their black 1.4kw unit
One more road trip this year, just a 5 day stint but I don't think I'll chance it. Who's had the best luck with what equipment? TIA.

Cheers,
Dirk

I've got the same setup. No problems here. Call Dave at JD's, he's the All Balls expert.

I have an interest in this subject as I am putting on the fourth starter on an '07 Ultra this week. I'm a little over 52,000 miles and just keep eating up clutch baskets, ring gears, pinion gears, etc.

I've been considering installing an All Balls 1.4 for some time now myself. I was led to believe they are the best.

4 in 52k? Something ain't right there Jim. The only changes I've made were to replace the ring gear/pinion gear to a 10/64 at 65k. I'm at 117k now.

Change out the ring and pinion gears to a 9/64 combo. You break that.......

Me too,
Decided screw it and rip all the wiring in the start system apart - this is the cable from the battery to the frame ground post. the corrosion is pretty extensive - 1/2 way thru the strands, wich certainly ain't helping.

Scraped all the frame paint away from the studs and reassembled with copper paste(new cable tomorrow), going to add a couple 10awg jumpers from the starter studs back to the frame posts and put a braided copper jumper between the 2 frame posts.
Hopefully a bunch of little things will let her spin with a little more oomph.

Dirk
