An Honest to Gosh Motorcycle Repair Question

Soo the bike had been sitting for weeks in my shed up at the cabin. No power to the shed, so no tender.

Went to get her out and she would turn over but not fire. I tried to jump it through the pigtail for the battery tender but no luck so I pulled the seat and tried to jump it off the truck, (engine off) but no go. Put a trickle charger on the 6 Amp setting for a couple of hours and she fired up. At first she wouldn't stay idling, but if I kept the revs up she would continue to run. I drove it home, about an hour ride and when I stopped for fuel she stayed running at idle just fine.

When I was riding, the amp gauge was bouncing between 11 amps and 14 amps but everything ran ok. Is this normal when it's trying to recharge?

When I got her home I hooked up the battery tender but I get a flashing red light which means bad connection to the battery:

The RED LED is FLASHING..

1. The fuse is defective in the ring terminal or alligator clip harness. - Replacement fuse: Bussman Blade Type: ATC-3 to ATC-7.5. (3A to 7.5A)

2. Battery Tender Plus clips or rings are not hooked to the battery correctly. - Check the connections at the battery posts. If the connections look good but the RED LED still FLASHES, try reversing the polarity of the output cable assembly.

3. Poor electrical contact. - See notes on cleaning electrical contacts.

4. Battery may be defective. - Check Battery Voltages & Have battery load tested.

Should I pull the battery and charge it off the bie before hooking up the tender? What else should I check?

An Honest to Gosh Motorcycle Repair Question

When you tried to jump start via the tender you blew the inline fuse on the tender connection.
Start there. Replace the fuse in the battery tender wire.
I suspect that your gauge was showing 11-14 VOLTS not amps. It sounds like you may have a bad battery, Mike, but to be fair, you should give it a full charge first and test it. You could carry it to any parts store for testing after it's charged.

I vote with both the dOofs, they're pretty smart. Almost ready to become full fledged Gazintas. Ricky is right about the tender fuse, not made for the kind of load you pushed through it and a battery that sits dead for awhile will corrode the plates.

Gosh, an Amp Gage, ain't seen one of those since my Grandma's '63 Plymouth wagon.

And I got a butt whipping, because when the battery went dead, I piped up from the back seat (10 YO at the time) that the funny gauge on the dash has been pointing to the left all day.

And my Dad said why didn't I say something sooner!


Right . . . , the 10 YO kid in the back seat is tasked with watching the Amp gauge while a grownup is driving the car . . .

if you get it started, ride it to Advance Auto Parts store ... they will ck your charging system and the battery for FREE, if bad battery they will sell you a new one, and they will install it for FREE ...... and, change the fuse in the tender line, and don't try to jump the bike thru that cable, it's not designed to carry that load

Bunk cell/cells from sitting and going flat on it's charge. When I neglected the Mule it was the exact same scenerio with the tender when I put it on too late. Flashing red light even tho everything was good and wouldn't pick up a charge..... New battery (on a tender ) and all is good.
