Product Review: The Big Green Egg...
OK.
I've been BBQing for a while.... ...and it's hard for me to get worked-up about a new cooker. I sold my Lang 84/MeadowCreek BBQ48 last fall.... ...it was just too big and I had stopped catering. I had gotten used to the automatic features of the J&R Oyler 700 we had at our store... ...just keep a fire lit, at this bad-boy would go! Since we closed the store...we had been without good BBQ for some time. The little cooker I had was way too finicky and had to be watched, for tempature spikes, constantly during a cook. 4-6 hours is bad enough for ribs...but this becomes exhausting trying to cook a Boston Butt for pulled pork or a Brisket. I had been looking into an electric unit by CookShack...but got re-directed at the last minute by a friend. I did some research & decided The Big green Egg was a good cooker. Air controls on top... My first cook ... 2 chickens cooked low & slow...the potato supports a temp probe just off the surface of the grate.... Since then I've done pork spare ribs, Boston Butts...a leg of lamb... ....and last night I put on a 16lb. Brisket...rubbed with my White Rub... ...this morning it's looking good... ...should be off in a few hours.... It rained all night...this thing held a constant temp of 224* since last night at 9pm when the Brisket went on....UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!! This is a very cool cooker...great for BBQing or grilling with high temps (up to 800*)!!! The one pictured is a Large model. Last edited by Q-Dog; 09-27-2008 at 12:32 PM. |

See,what you gotta do now is work out some sort of endorsement deal for Gorilla Sauce tied to the Egg, so you can retire soon....

does it make a lot of smoke? I live in a townhouse community, they get pissed when I smoke for 6 hours on my grill, all night I would get evicted.

Not cheap.
The 125lb. ceramic cooker comes at a price....about $700. Add the stand and an interior piece they call a Platesetter(to cook indirectly..i.e. BBQ) anther $150. This can be used as a Grill & slow-cooker... And...Lifetime Warranty if bought through one of their stores. http://www.biggreenegg.com/ You can't get more easy and still burn lump charcoal. |

Straight-up lump charcoal makes smoke and ash, not much of either..but it is wood. Direct-cooking chicken will smoke like h*** when the birds start dripping grease...it's a smell I love and I know drives the neighbors wacky!!!

When I was a kid--8 or so--a friend's dad had a similar cooker he'd gotten in Japan.

I've got a couple friends who have those and they swear they will never use any other cooker again. They really are that great! Expensive, but if you're a serious grillmaster, it can't be beat!!!
