Avast is a good, free antivirus program. It's what I use.

it is free for 30 days and will fix even the worst malware
for freeware
try Adaware

I just loaded Zone Alarm with Force Field for some one and I really like it. The FF part has has real time control on the browser.

AVG has an anti-malware built in, the Malwarebytes has removed things that Spybot couldn't touch.

I use Symantec Corporate AV since it takes up a lower memory footprint and has a cleaner interface than the standard Norton AV. You should use a combination of Ad-Aware 2007/2008 and Spybot S&D to make sure that you are getting rid of all of the bad stuff on your PC. It helps if you are using FireFox, my MW issues have dwindled down to near nothing since switching to it a couple of years ago.

IE would allow Active-X controls to load on all kinds of different sites and once you get a browser hi-jacker, it's extremely difficult to clean. They can replicate themselves to places on your hard drive that are almost impossible to find and clean up.
