Best luck I've had is get it hot again then use a piece of wood (paint stir stick is about perfect) to scrape off as much as you can. The remainder eventually burns away. I've heard of different methods, but anything you do to abrade it off there is likely to discolor the chrome.

Goof Off!! Use it on the exhaust when cold. Non-abrasive and works great!!
I prefer the spray. I accidently burn tree sap (park in back yard, didn't notice until after hot) on my exhaust while visiting my sister. Rode from Waldorf, MD to Charlotte, NC. Sprayed this on, waited 10 min, sprayed again and wiped the crap right off. Give it a shot. Oh yeah, I immediately followed with a good chrome cleaner/polish.

WD-40
Did the same thing, too (twice), a few years ago. Saturate it with WD-40 and use a rubber squeegie, your fingernail (or something else that won't scratch the pipe) or the 0000 steel wool Apache mentions to go at it. The key is keeping it saturated to avoid scratching. Takes some work, but it will come off.

No more steel wool on any bike of mine..
rraymond.
Like Harris says, use a wood stick or a plastic scraper (when it cool) to remove what left on your exhaust pipe. I tried the "000000000000000000000000000000000" steel wool and it still ever so slightly "clouded" the finnish on an exhaust pipe. So..I don't recommend any steel to steel contact. I'm a a fan of "Goof Off" and smells pretty too.. |

I bought a chrome cleaner from my local shop called Colonial Brassy. This stuff is incredible. I used it for the same thing and also to remove my wife's melted boot heel. Its pretty abrasive so I used it in small amounts but it didn't scratch the pipes. I'm not sure where else you can get it but you can try a search.
