now THIS is high performance!!
I posted this down the street about 5 months ago but I thought for those of you that didn't see this, that you might get a kick out of it. This bike is stuck in a shed around here collecting dust at the moment. A few years ago Otto built this 142" (4-1/4" x 5") motor that has two 80" Roots type blowers driven 2:! ratio and one per cylinder. 11:1 static compression ratio with an Andrews X240 cam grind, it ran on alcohol due to the size fuel nozzles they could get from Kinsler at the time, the cylinder heads were swapped, front on the rear and rear on the front so the blowers are mounted fore and aft and the Hilborn injection with 3" throttle plate each and then setup for spraying a mix of nitrous and race fuel on top of the methanol at WFO. Otto also spent about a week building the bottom end on this motor as it has an extensive amount of work done to it. The story goes that he got the drag bike together, 14" slick by the way, and it was supposed to be a wicked Pro Gas bike but the organization was sticking them in Nitro Funny Bike instead of Pro Gas. They went to Route 66 at Joliet and got it fired up in the pits. Apparently 3 atmospheres of boost and 11:1 cr was a -bitch- to start. To start this thing, the motor had to be rotated by hand to the point where the three 1000cca batterries and 24V diesel starter motor could begin to rotate before hitting one of the boosted compression strokes. And on initial fire up, it was one of the most sinister sounding motors ever heard, guys were backing away from it in fear but there was Otto with his face in it trying to get the beast to behave. Interestingly, one of the problems that kept it from making a pass down the track that day was it took an enormous hand and forearm strength to crack the throttle open from idle due to the supercharger induced vacuum on the throttle plates. Otto says he has the solution to that now, I told him we need to go rescue this bike and get it running again and let's see what it'll do!!
I asked about estimated power and outside experts thought based on the design it should make 500 ft-lbs of torque at rpm, that calculates out to around 800 hp at 8500. .

Dayum, looks like a science project gone wrong, very wrong!
Impressive numbers on the HP though, hope Otto can fit in some time on his schedule to pull that back out and get it to behave in a little more civilized manner!

The next problem is how do you even begin to put down a fraction of that power to the pavement? Wow, that is super impressive.

I'd drive it.
More like hang-on-to-it-screamin'-like-a-little-girl-for-5-seconds, but I'd give it a go!

Clutch management. Clutches are quite sophisticated these days and with the use of a on board datalogger, measuring engine rpm, clutch rpm and wheel speed, you can get it dialed in real well by managing the progressive engagement for highest vehicle acceleration. Essentially the same technique used by top fuelers and funny cars. The key is to understand what it wants for the given track conditions and get it setup correctly to go down the track.

That is truly amazing. I never considered that you could get that much management in such a small package. What percentage of your power do you expect to utilize in a quarter mile?
