The Ultimate BB Gun

This is the air rifle that Lewis and Clark took on theirexpedition and AMAZED the Indians!
It takes 1500 strokes to pump this rifle to full pressure, afterwhich it could shoot more than 400 . 46 cal . round balls, each of whichcan blast aclean hole through a 1 inch pine board at 100 yards.
This is a VERY interesting gun! How many of you very gun-knowledgeable folks out there even knew that a rifle like this ever existed, especially back then?
This video is with sound and great on full screen .

I can't recall if they had one, or an example of one, in the Cody museum gun wing?

And why in the world aren't we still making LOTS of guns like that?
That'd kinda put the kibosh on the "ammo shortage" (Translated: price gouging)
in a hurry, wouldn't it?

Heard of 'em several times. Intentions were to greatly decrease the amount of black powder that needed to be taken along, while still having a gun capable of taking game to eat along the way. Amazing they had the technology to make an air tank capable of those pressures.

They still make big bore hi-pressure air guns, but nowadays they are filled like scuba tanks. This one shoots a .45 caliber bullet at speeds similar to the old black powder loads.

Guy in Urbana, MO named Quackenbush makes custom big bore air rifles capable of taking big game.

They're not really that expensive either.

They had a display of lots of early airguns and at least a text about this one. Not sure if they had a replica of it.
