It was definitely the stator
My brother and I pulled the primary tonight and the old stator came out smelling like burned electrical. It is a wonder that it would even charge with the lights off. The wires going to the plug for the voltage regulator were bare, nothing left of the insulation.
So I cleaned it out real good and sprayed it down with electrical cleaner and covered everything to keep dust out. Time for bed. I'll put it together tomorrow afternoon.
