btw...the wantagh parkway dead ends into the jones beach, the meadowbrook parkway is where the scene in the godfather where they shot up the guy at the toll booths (which are long gone) it runs parallel to the wantagh

you can not drive on parkways on long island only highways and expressways.


TV's '24' may be savvy, but it's not smart about LI

Long Island played a key role in Monday's episode of "24," which takes place this season in the New York area.

One of the show's key plot points this year involves keeping uranium rods out of the hands of terrorists. On Monday, we learned that the rods were in a truck that had been "redirected" to a weigh station off the Wantagh Parkway.

Hmmm. As any Long Islander knows, there can't be a weigh station on that road because trucks aren't allowed.

We asked executive producer David Fury, who grew up in Old Bethpage and also wrote the episode, for an explanation:

"At one point the nuclear rods were being brought into Manhattan via the Jersey Turnpike," he notes. "But since bringing them into Manhattan was going to prove a hurdle to the terrorists later, we opted to make the storage facility on Long Island.

"I tried to pull up some roadway that would be slightly less conspicuous than the LIE for the trucks transporting the materials toward the city," he continued. "I kind of remembered trucks weren't allowed on the Wantagh, but it sounded good, and at the very least, it would give fans something to talk about on the Internet. Some people think '24' takes place in the future. . . . Maybe by then, the ban on trucks is lifted."

I turned them off after the cast turned into GreenPeace after every episode. Haven't gone back..prolly never will. Shame, it was my favorite show.

You can't really DRIVE on any roads on the island, can you? If I recall, it was just a big parking lot the last time I was there

thats one of the roads you actually can drive on, it runs down to the beach, then there is the robert moses causeway which runs along the beach with the atlantic on one side and the great south bay on the other, its a beautiful 20+ mile road...

In other words, "i screwed up and i'm too cool to admit it and have come up with this feeble excuse".

You can't drive commercial vehicles on parkways.
Which is a pain in the butt in up here in Westchester, because most of our main roads are parkways.

Interestingly...Most drivers that blow their horns a lot tend to be tourists...or people from Jersey.

Well, that is the magic of film. You can have someone coming into the airport and all the way downtown in the time it takes for a short conversation. Most airports to downtown route will take a lot longer than that, even with an honest cabbie.
