Tires will last even longer if you keep your bike up on a lift in your garage instead of riding it.

You could always leave it on a trailer.

I would caution against that. Any hole or crack in the casing can become a pinch point and will eventually eat through the inner tube. You may get lucky and wear out the tire before this happens, but why chance it? You have the tire off anyhow, I'd take it to a tire store and get a patch put on. Hell, I'll do it for free if you bring it to me.

As for the original post, the industry cautions against repairs in the "shoulder" area of a tire as well as the sidewall. These areas flex differently than the tread area and the durability of repairs is reduced. Liability issues to be sure, but like others have said, there's only two of them holding you up and out of the ditch, is it worth the risk?

The "Just my " section:

I read a while ago that motorcycle maintenance should be viewed like aircraft maintenance rather than like a car. I am told by a pilot friend that the instance of parts replacement is much higher due to the potential consequences of part failure.

........
True, but at the time, I was out in the middle of nowhere on a Sunday. Had to do a road side repair. I carried tire irons and a spare tube for just such an occasion. I just got lucky and had two friends with me to lift the bike and found some wood to set the bike on to get the tire off. As I recall, I put another 2k on it before I replaced the tire and tube. I guess I was lucky. Luke you are correct though, I am not arguing the point, even with a tube, the tire should be patched. Damn glad I run tubeless tire now.

It is just like a plug you would put in a tubeless tire on the side of the road. It gets you off the side of the road and somewhere you can get it fixed properly or replace the tire.

I never seem to ever wear a tire out. They usually get replaced before a major road trip because I do not think the tread will last the 4k miles of the trip. A lot cheaper to do at home than out on the road.
