BLUE TOOTH
AS I have the Zumo, blue tooth ready, and a phone the same way..
I would like my stuff to talk through my radio on the ultra.. I know i can use a patch cord to the Aux on the radio.. Also my phone will link to the zumo... I spoke th the dealer today.. They sell , believe it or not.... A SCREAMING CHICKEN blue tooth add on.... It must be SE, because it comes standard on the SE bikes for 08.... AND, I can buy it for $499.00 I'm sure there is another CHEAPER way.. I may stay with the $4.99 mini plug cord.... Anyone else looked into this..

Isn't that add on just to enable bluetooth capability?
I think that is just the beginning of the cash outlay.

I haven't been able to find enough reviews on either of those to make up my mind which one to get. My job keeps me on the road, so I have to be able to field a call now and then while riding, even if it is just starting the call while I find somewhere to pull over to finish it. Hearing the turn by turn directions and listening to MP3's from the Zumo through the headset would be the primary purpose of that for me.

I have heard there are limits to what you can get re true stereo sound via a bluetooth headset solution. Also, I think that battery life is short as well. But that may just be early generation stuff too. The whole idea of being cordless and having all of the electronic devices chatting with each other through a common interface is great, but it seems like there may still be some birthing pains to go through before it all gets sorted out and working like people expect.

I have a bluetooth phone and several headsets, none suitable for in helmet use, but should be fine for in car use. I may have to screw around with it to see how well it works in the next few days.
I still have to get my Zumo mount on the bike. Will probably wait until after I have all my damn polishing done. Bike spring cleaning sucks.

What kind of battery life do you get out of your headsets?

Normal use, I get a few days out of them.
By normal use, I mean that they are in standby (usually over 100 hours of standby time) and only in actual use while I am on a call (usually about 2 hours a day, gotta love my job) I would imagine that if you were listening to MP3's on it, the battery life would go down hill rapidly, probably only get around 3-5 hours of total life out of a headset on full charge with a good battery. I don't have either of those headsets that are designed for use in helmet. I have a few different models of Plantronics headsets for general use. So far, I haven't seen them develope a headset for use in a helmet, or else I would be all over it.

That 3-5 hours of battery life in continuous use is the issue with the bluetooth headsets on helmets right now.

For the size of the equipment and the small nature of the battery, getting that much continuous use would be doing very good.
On top of all that, the Bluetooth technology is far from perfect. I have occasional drop outs where the radios just stop talking to each other. Usually happens during a period of being in standby or right after using it (like immediately following ending a call), however, I have found it to be the radio in the main device (in this case, my cell phone) that is the culprit, not the headset. The bluetooth market never took off like they thought it would, so the developement of it hasn't been there like it has for other things. If all else fails, the Zumo does have separate Mic and Speaker outputs on it, you can always run a wired headset with a quick dosconnect to the helmet. I have seen several nice options for that as well, I would just prefer to be wireless if at all possible.

Dunno, could just be the phone and headset I have. YMMV. J&M makes a wired headset for shorty-style helmets and they recommend using it with their stereo headset amplifier MA-967. They each go for $200.00!! F... that. |
