Ahhhhhh, the wonders of cooler air.
I went out and did a timing run today (still chasing a ping or two) in 84* air. Got the detonation dealt with and the bike runs like a champ. No kidding, I passed the same guy on a CVO Ultra 3 times today (boy was he pissed when I told him at a stoplight it was a stock 103 that had stepped on his feelings). But this brings up an interesting thought.... Had it been 95*, I know I would have had more detonation. It almost makes me wonder if I ought to have seasonal maps for the bike.

I would agree on two maps, or get the tuning done during the neutral time/temperature so it's not too far one way or the other. My bike runs good the whole year but when the air is cold, OMG. Hang on. Good thing paper towels aren't involved in this endeavor.

Psst...Russ...did you hear that? OMG...did you hear that? What was that? The pursuit for the perfect tune is endless. It ends with age.

So I finally got the herpes out of my new netbook and got back to playing around with the timing on the bike. Warren turned me on to a program called MyTune, and I finally got a chance to use it today.
Oh. My. God. In an hour I'd eliminated the pinging. It would have taken me weeks to do this by hand. Do a data run, plug the starting timing tables into MyTune, load the .dm3 run file, then hit "start". Boom, 10 seconds later it gives you brand spanking new timing tables with the changes highlighted. With three runs I completely vanquished both the audible detonation and the feel of the timing being pulled. Gotta wait for a warmer day to check the VEs again and do a final, monster timing run, but I think the end is in sight. Then I can take it to Smart Dave and see how close I am.

If its that close, do you really need to put it on the dyno?

I noticed a bit more detonation yesterday when we were up in the mountains, so more timing runs today. I added 1 degree across the board, then let MyTune do it's thing. Four 10 minute runs later, I've got no audible detonation and the bike pulls much smoother and harder.
The weather looks like it's gonna cooperate tomorrow, so I'll try adding in another degree and see what happens.

Is it really easy as plugging the dm3 into mytune? Is it worth the $29.99?

You need to have custom axes in order to have all the cells populated, but I can email them to you. You plug in the starting timing values, load the .dm3 file, press a button, 10 seconds later you have revised timing tables.
It's really that simple, and it's really that good. Edited to add - One of the nice things is that it seems to be somewhat intelligent as to how it addresses detonation. I did 4 runs yesterday, and it pulled timing in the same areas on the front cylinder on all 4 runs. This says to me that it eases it out (in 1/4 degree increments if necessary) rather than going overboard like the stock knock sensor. I'm going to add in another degree today and try again, that should get me close to maxed-out overall. Then I can start targeting specific areas that I think will take more.

I'll have to give it a try. Timing is a pain in the ass without a dyno. Even with, it would be time consuming
