I was there back in 88. Ford Island was a pretty cool place and you had to take a shuttle out to the island then (Active duty/retired/reserve only). I see they have a bridge out now.

The tour still has to start on the shore and go out on the normal tour boat still.

The new bride is retractable so that the island can still be circumnavigated. Tours still go out on launches from the visitor center. There is only one other 'tour' but its availability/accesabiltiy is very limited. It is a tour that leaves from CINCPAC's boat house. Was lucky enough to "know somebody who knows somebody" and take that tour when we were there a couple of years ago.
