<crackly radio voice> Yestarday, a date which will live in infamy... </crackly radio voice>
Seriously, my Mom still hated them until the day she died. Her little brother came back from the Navy a changed man, and she worked in a defense plant. Quote I most remember from her on the subject: "We sold them our scrap metal and they threw it back at us one shell at a time."

My dad's (paraphrased) comment on the subject: "The regular soldiers were just folks like us who wanted to go home to their families; it was the government that caused all the problems."
My son used to live on property that was once part of the Japanese Heart Mountain internment camp. I drove up to the historical site one day and found names of relatives of kids I knew in California as well as the names of my first boss's brothers who died in Europe during the war. There were half a dozen cars in the parking lot that day- every one of them a H*nda or Toyota. I do appreciate irony.

December 8th 1941 was my fathers 20th birthday. He was a U.S. Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton in San Diego. He spent his birthday loading artillery shells onto the ships. He left port on one of them and his battle in the South Pacific began.
Happy Birthday, Dad!
