Ft. Thunder H-D - Moore, OK
This past weekend I made my second trip this month to OK.
Noticed I was developing a rather consistent leak from between the primary and the transmission. My service guy has been warning me of an creeping leak from around what appeared to him to be the shifter shaft seal so I assumed that had gotten worse. Apparently not though. I was watching the engine oil at every gas stop and the transmission fluid each morning and neither of those levels changed over the first 2.5 days of the trip, so the noticable volume of fluid had to be coming from the primary. I didn't have a good way to check though. On saturday I had a meeting into the afternoon in Norman, OK but made it up I-35 to Ft. Thunder H-D in Moore, OK. Told 'em what I'd been seeing and they agreed to check the fluid levels right away to get me back on the road (to Olive Branch ... ) with a little more peace of mind ASAP. I went in and found something interesting... In about 20 minutes my bike was back out front. They didn't charge me a dime to top off the primary fluid and put it back together again (it was about a 1/4 low). I was on my way. Every body was helpful and friendly. Mitch, in service at Ft. Thunder H-D in Moore, OK, took great care of Silver! I was grateful -- so I bought a few t-shirts... Two Thumbs Up to their weary traveller service. epilogue: On the next three gas stops, I noticed that the leak had gotten worse than on the way out. I had about 700 miles to go. Stopped off at N00dles and Unchained's that night and made the call to ride on to Atlanta Sunday after assessing things with John (and hangin' out for breakfast and a visit to their biker church). Dropped it off for the 72.5k service (which is just a 2.5k) and the jury's still out on how much oil was left in the primary. I never had trouble with it or felt anything funny in the clutch, but we'll see what we see in another thread... |

Running w/out primary oil will only eat up your adjuster and overheat & stretch your primary chain. The clutch will work fine.
I know this because half way through the '84 FXST production run they changed to a sealed primary, versus sharing the engine oil.

That is a cool shirt! Hope you get the leak straightened out too. I have an English car, so when it isn't leaking, I know I am out of fluid.
