Laptop crashed
I've spent all my free time the last several days trying to recover some pictures and music I had on my laptop. You would think an IT guy like me would be more careful. I didn't keep too much on the laptop. All my banking programs, important legal communications, etc were generally kept on my desktop in the other room. There are some pictures I downloaded to the laptop for convenience sake, and practically all my music that I would like to get back.
I'm pretty sure the disk is fried, at least the one in there that I need. I booted off a "Live "Linux" distro, and I can see the disk, and it mounts fine. It's when I try to copy the data off when the problem starts. Maybe it copies a couple files, then starts complaining about input output. Has anyone ever used one of those data recovery services? Are they expensive?

recovery services can cost $1,000 and up. Never used one.
I just don't understand why people don't have a backup program... |

I have lived, and I have learned. (a couple of things) ....the hard way. Yes, I have used Drive Savers for business computers.(many years ago) Even though they are good, sometimes they can only recover some / partial files & info. It depends on the particular scenerio they have to work with. It also depends on what your info is relatively worth to retrieve. My situations were desperate. But alas, all the kings horses and all the kings men..... So, Repeat after me - I (your name) will at least occasionally attempt to successfully backup my computer, and my spouse's,friend's, concubine's ... There are some great options out there. Hope you can recover. OZNOG Bofinn, What do you do for your backups? |

I back up my desktop automagically. I was just too lazy to go into the computer room, unhook the USB drive from the desktop and backup the laptop manually. This was a laptop used primarily to surf the web. It's not the end of the world if I don't get the pictures back. I had uploaded some of the pics to my various websites, it'll be a PIA but I can download them, given the time.
I think I'll look into a NAS array. They're getting pretty cheap these days.

Not yet Billy, but I will as soon as I get back home on Friday. I don't hold much hope though, I think the disk is damaged.
I'll try that before I buy some software. So you just hold it under the faucet, or do you use that sprayer thingy?
