In further investigation, it appears to almost always happen in or just before right hand turns. Being an '89, you have to hold the turn signal button down to keep the turn signals on. While doing so your right thumb comes in contact with the kill switch. I've been careful to not touch the kill switch and haven't had a problem since. So I need to thoroughly clean the kill switch so that a little bump doesn't cause the problem.

Turns out it was a loose ground wire coming off the ignition module. I was getting ready to replace the module and was tracing wires to make sure I got one with the right connector. Whew.

I'd check for a loose ground wire off of the ignition module if I was you.
