Automatic Compression Release Installation.
Shoulda Coulda Woulda. Oh well.
I'm going to have to install compression releases. I stalled her out in a construction zone. Stop and go, one lane, barriers on both sides, and on a uphill, hot engine. I thought the starter was going to rip out of her. Plus the extra load on a hot soak from a gas stop. I decided to install the MoCo's kit. I want automatic because of the issue I mentioned. Don't want to fiddle with manual releases when folks are honking at me. Questions: 41 When I pull the heads do I also need to remove the cylinders to install new base o rings? 41.1 Can a good dealer service dept handle it or should i find a independent machine shop drill them and perhaps clean/open the stock heads up some? 41.1A Any recommendations and past experience with this would be appreciated.

You know how hot it is down here, dj. I do not have compression releases.
I have not had the failures that you have mentioned.

Mebbe try a higher-torque starter.
I ended up puttin' one in the GTO after having the same problems you describe. Stock starter couldn't handle a heat-soaked, high compression engine, especially one that had the initial timing advanced a few degrees. The new starter spins that pup over effortlessly now. Bonus, in your case: you won't have to tear half the motor down to redo the heads.

That's an idea. Couldn't hurt to look into one.

Rivera Primo 66 tooth starter gear with 9 tooth pinion...... one of my better mods!! That sucker turns over anything in 120*"s fresh after running hard and a quick fuel stop....

If you're talking about your 2008 it doesn't have base gaskets so you don't have to pull the cylinders.

Exactly. It uses o rings at the base. Should be ok?

I personally wouldn't change them but you have to make that decision (disclaimer). I would probably go with DAK47's suggestion.

I'm going with the ACR from the MoCo.
Just need to find a shop to modify the heads.

The tool from the MoCo to install the ACR's in the center of the head is $950.
The tool from Jim's is to install MCR's next to the spark plugs. I'm doin' ACR's.

Come to think of it, I'm there, so I might as well pull the jugs off and have them sprayed black.
It's looking like the Guru who tuned Orbit's 88 is going to be doing my heads.
