Damned engine light is coming on again...

Off to check codes...

btw... decided to make this a stickie and added the code checking procedures from TXCHOP and Woody to Post #1 for your collective convenience.

will aftermarket components affect codes ?

I have followed these steps (more than a few times now )..

1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.

2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.

3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting sould illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word “diag” should then appear.

this is what I'm seeing

Redhill, what happens if you push the odometer button again after seeing that. Does any of letters flash?

Redhill, I'm not sure of the year model ECM that the instructions in this thread apply to. I've seen these instructions floating around for a few years now, and thought I read somewhere where they were for 2004 and later. They do seem to work on my bike which is a 2004, and 8-Ball's which is a 2005. Perhaps someone here will chime up about this and clear the issue up.

I see by your profile that you have a 2000 model year bike. Didn't they have an ECM made from a totally different manufacturer back then?

Just a thought.

00-03 HD Codes And Activation
Diagnostics and Fuel Injection Related

Remove right side saddlebag and side cover if so equipped. Remove protective plug from data link connector. Other models will be under the seat.

2. To activate the diagnostic feature, follow these steps.
a. Create diagnostic test wire or use a female spade clip which will bridge the two terminals perfectly.
b. Install diagnostic test wire/clip across Terminals 1 and 2 on the data link connector, they are marked.
c. Turn Ignition/Light Key Switch to IGNITION and wait approximately 10 seconds (4 seconds lamp ON, 6 seconds lamp OFF) for check engine lamp to start flashing.

3. All trouble codes are sent out as a series of flashes. To retrieve the first digit of the trouble code simply observe the number of times the lamp flashes.
a. The lamp will then flash one or more times to indicate the first digit of the trouble code.
b. The length of time the lamp is illuminated and the length of time in which it is off are each about 0.5 second in duration.

4. The second digit follows:
a. Following the transmission of the first digit, there is a 1.2 second pause in which the lamp is off.
b. The lamp will then flash one or more times to indicate the second digit of the trouble code. Count the number of times the lamp flashes to retrieve the second digit.

5. If more than one trouble code is sent:
a. Following transmission of the second digit of the first code, there is a 3 second pause in which the lamp is off.
b. Once all codes have been sent, the data string is repeated. When you have recorded the same trouble code twice, it is an indication that the transmission has been restarted and that all trouble codes have been retrieved.

IMPORTANT NOTE ..If diagnostic test wire is installed across Pins 1 and 2 on connector in lieu of a Scanalyzer, the ECM is placed in a diagnostic test mode and the engine will start. The test wire must be removed from the data connector and the ignition switch turned OFF or the check engine lamp will continue to flash codes. A historic trouble code resides in the memory of the ECM until the code is cleared by use of the Scanalyzer or a total of 50 trips has elapsed. A “trip” consists of a start and run cycle, the run cycle lasting at least 30 seconds. After the 50 trip retention period, the trouble code is automatically erased from memory (that is, assuming no subsequent faults of the same type are detected in that period). The numbers after the 'historic' or 'current' is the speedo code number, but without the electrical diagnostics manual you're not going to know what they mean.

The code numbers are the numbers that appear in red.

OK, got home the other night, noticed the bike was running a little funny - and the check engine light was on.

I just checked the codes (Thanks to all that posted the info on how to, and code meanings here!)

One error code found, P0263 - REAR INJECTOR OPEN/LOW

OK, so now what?

1) you could ride out to Otto's.

2) How long has it been since ya rode it? Old gas building shellac in the injector?

3) Bad solenoid in the injector causing it not to open?

That code is simply telling you the ECM is reading an incorrect resistance across the solenoid coil of the rear injector.

First thing is to check the connector, to be sure sure it's clean and all the way on. While you have it off, measure the resistance through the injector looking for 10-25 ohms (this is for 06 25* injectors). If both of those check good, you're probably into a wiring problem.

Otto's, maybe later...

Rode last Saturday (I think I actually saw you while I was out) got about 70 miles, last Sunday (only about 20/30 miles), a couple of times to work this week. Actually filled it up last week (4.5 gallons), and again Thursday evening (4.25 gallons).
