The big thing for me is regular exercise. I was a skinny little thing up until my mid 20s (6'2", 145 pounds), then my metabolism slowed down and I ballooned up to 225 over the course of a few years. I went up and down as I'd get interested in some form of exercise, but I'd get sick or hurt something, then use that as an excuse not to work out.
I don't recommend it, but what really did it for me was my divorce. I suddenly had nothing but time on my hands, and I wanted to get back out into the dating world, so I spent 2 hours a day doing something. Some days it was weightlifting, other days it was biking, other days it was rock climbing. On top of that, I drastically cut back my calorie intake. I've always ate healthy food, but I eat way too much of it. Bottom line, I went from 225 to 180 in about 6 months (I'm sure the stress of the divorce helped as well). Now that I'm in another relationship, my time is at a premium again, and I'm getting good home-cooked meals, I'm up to about 190 with a bit of a gut. I've decided that I like food too much to really diet, so that means I drag my butt out of bed at 4:50 every day to spend 30 minutes on the elliptical and do a bunch of push ups and crunches. As long as I look intimidating enough to the boys who come calling on my daughter, I'm happy.
