The Hobbit

Saw it today and finally a movie worth the price of admission.

Peter Jackson really pays tribute to the book. Several lines of dialogue taken straight from the text. If you get a chance to see it, do it. I saw the 2D version because I strongly dislike 3D films.

Sure they are stretching the movie out to at least two installments (I think 3) to cover the single book. At first I was dissappointed to hear this. I thought Jackson could have got it done in one epic showing but after seeing the movie, I really appreciate him doing this. I suppose I have just gotten use to filmmakers deleting so much from a book and script writers putting the puzzle together with quick scenes and narration... but with Jackson doing it this way, you really get to see the book unfold as it was meant to be.

Time was spent with the first meeting of the dwarves and Bilbo's house. This could have been done in five minutes but in really going in depth we get to see so many great scenes take place in the movie that happened in the book. The dinner feast, the songs, the 'dish washing'. It was great.

The battle scenes are intense and one actually gave me chills as it unfolded.

If you enjoyed LOR's trilogy, you WILL enjoy this movie. If you enjoyed 'The Hobbit' - the book, then you will not only enjoy this movie but you will appreciate it. A rarity in Hollywood these days IMHO.

Thanks for the review Phil. I'm looking forward to seeing this one soon. Like you, I had a little bit of reservations about Jackson taking a book half the size of the books in the trilogy and making into 3 movies but I'm willing to give him a little latitude.

I've been debating whether or not to see this. Thanks for helping me decide!

Is very good movie, didn't know about it being two parter, don't go for the 3 D , only did because it was at the time we could go to see it.

Just got back.
I'm also an old fan from way back and was not disappointed.
I also ended up in 3-D because of timing and could've done without...

Lone voice in the wilderness here, I guess.
I loved the first and third movies in the LOR trilogy, but found The Hobbit (installment one of three) to be plodding.

I found quite a few new things in the plot I didn't remember about the original book. Someone told me they used all of the info from the appendices that Tolkien wrote after the Hobbit to expand the plot. I came into the movie expecting it to be a complete telling of the tale, not a 3 parter. It was good, but I liked LOTR better, at least so far.
