IIRC, it was a tight fit between the frame and the filter - and you'll want to be sure you have enough room for a filter wrench and in my case, enough room so that the oil filter and adapter weren't hitting the frame at any RPMs - my FXD is rubber mounted. I mocked mine up to be equidistant from the frame tubes and made sure I could access the filter with a wrench before buttoning it up.

As for the cover - it's here: http://www.dragspecialties.com/fatbo...cooler%20cover

Thanks man. Anyone know where to order out of the fatbook? Sorry for all the questions...

I use covers for both my oil coolers as well. My rule is, if I am wearing my coat, my cooler is wearing its cover.

Another option I don't see anyone mentioning is turning your engine guard into an oil cooler, if you have one. The winter before last I made the change on mine for about $70.00 in parts and labor. It got its best test last July when I took a 1,000 mile round trip in temps over 100*...Even flying down the interstate at 80+mph, the temps at the pan never exceeded 200*.

Here's a couple pics:

I tapped into the return oil line to intercept the hot oil on the way back to the pan...this way it has a little longer to cool off before hitting the pan, where it will cool a bit more; and by running off the return side, you avoid the high pressure side of the pump and have much less chance of getting leaks. I've had no leaks in the 12,000 miles I've been running it.

Capt'n Lee, is the same thing you are talkin about? I'm really interested in this.

Thanks for the detailed pics Hag.

Edit - Just curious, How much more oil does this require?

yes and no,

yes on the crashbar part and no on the other . I bought just the oil filter adapter w/thermostat. . Although SeaHag's way is just as good (except no thermostat) and a hellava lot cheaper.

Seahag do you have a bypass valve or sumtin????

I believe that second pic of Seahags is of the bypass/thermostat. He did quite a full write up on it over at Harleyarena when he did it.

Seahags writeup at harleyarena

I have no idea if you have to be registered there to read post/see pictures or not.
The oil cooler starts with post #26.

edit---------------

yep appears you do have to be registered there to view the post... I logged out and tried to view it from my link and it told me to log in.

If anyone is interested in this mod it would be well worth your time to read up on it there. Seahag did a great job of documenting that and some other mods... painting the inner fairing, oil cooler, new stereo, new Yooper cables, oil temp gauge.

good reading.

Frank,

If you go to AAFES.com and then follow the Centric Mall link, a place called Black Hawk Custom Cycles sell to GIs at a pretty good discount--some items better than others. If you have the Drag or CC number, you can search for it.

That is an awesome setup that you have there. I do have a crash bar. Another idea in my lineup....
