I reckon I just might have to arrange to be there. After today at work, I decided what I need most out of life is a long peaceful walk in the surf on North Padre Island, but a noisy MC show might be just as good in its own way. I am counting the days to resigning my job. Eleven and a half years of attorney hijinks is more than enough for me. I look forward to less nerve racking employment: bomb defusing, perhaps.

One year I went to the Lone Star Rally in Galveston. My very first rally, I insisted on riding and almost froze to death on the way down. A girlfriend in Fort Worth had asked that I walk into the ocean and think of her because it had been too long since she'd been there herself. And so, in the middle of the rally, bikes, vendors, scores of people everywhere, I take off my boots and socks, roll up my jeans and wade into the frigid water. I'm feeling somewhat idiotic at this point, but I spread my arms wide, threw back my head and thought of my friend Chris. After a few minutes I waded back to shore, did my best to clean off the sand before putting my socks and boots back on and my phone starts ringing. It's Chris. . ."You just did it didn't you?" She said she "saw" me there. I love that girl.

When I was growing up on the Texas coast, we used to laugh our heads off at the fool snowbirds who went swimming in the gulf when we knew darn well it was frigid. Now that I've spent 33 years in Wyoming, I go to Texas, laugh my head off at the fool Texans who are wearing jackets on a seventy degree day, and head for the beach. It's all perspective. I took my Wyoming native daughter to Ireland in April a couple of years ago and she went swimming in the North Atlantic off Achille Island dressed in a bikini and windbreaker. The surfers were all dressed in wet suits and figured she'd die of pneumonia. My daughter thought the water was "nice and brisk" and went out again later in the day. No, I did not go swimming. Southern blood never thickens up enough for the North Atlantic in April.
