Long dog night at our house
Our eleven year old lab, Bois d'arc (pronounced Arkansas style Bo-dar) had a stroke last night. The vet came to our house and decided it was indeed a stroke despite the rareness of strokes in dogs. There are no animal MRIs or EEGs in the state to conclusively prove it but Keith has been a vet for over fifty years and I have faith in his diagnosis. We're lucky to have him. Where else do you get a vet who makes house calls, stays two and a half hours to watch an animal, and charges $75?
Bois is up and moving this morning, left, always to the left which indicates a right sided stroke. We're hoping for the best possible outcome. Doggy prayers would be appreciated. Xmas 2015.jpg

Thank you all. He's doing a little better, I think. Spends a lot of time sleeping , still circles left but can go in a straight line now. We've got him in the dog bed in the living room with our grandpuppy, a black Lab female. Gives him something to watch.
Yep, that's Mini-Mag about this time last year. Pretty in pink and without the don't mess with me cop expression she puts on most mornings like makeup. Beasties affect her most positively.

Thank you all for the support and fine sentiments.
Bois is still with us. This time yesterday, he was absolutely unresponsive to any sort of stimuli. Breathing slowing. All the signs one doesn't want to see. Went on for hours. Then all of a sudden, he opened his eyes, sat up, ate a dish of food, drank a bowl of water, and let it be known he needed help to get to the dog bathroom outside. The Lady of the Animals surely knows; I do not and the vet says, "I have no idea." He's still sleeping a lot and not at all his old self but he's here and moving enough to keep us hoping.

Bois spent the day outside in the sun with his girl dogs. When I called them to the gate this evening, he came straight over with barely a detour, got down the steps with good spirit, and took a few turns to settle himself on what has become his private dog bed. He's still veering left and is not recovered by a long shot but he has come so far from his comatose state a couple of days ago that we can't help but be encouraged.
