12.5" apes on a Springer Classic

Has anybody here installed 12.5" apes on their FLSTSC? I'm looking for the cable/line lengths you used. I've heard 6 over and have PM'd with a fellow VTF'r who used 8 and 10 over on his FXSTS but want to be sure before I purchase the cable and such. I also plan on doing internal wires and know I need an extended harness which I found in the Drag Specialties catalog. Your input is appreciated.

I've asked this on the other forum but seems like most of the knowledge has maybe moved to here. I've had one member respond there but he rides a Fatboy and I'm sure there may be some differences between the two.

Buy the bars first, then...

Use a piece of nylon twine to act as the cable's. Extra hands my help. This should give you a good measure for length. 8-10 over seems a bit much.

Do not forget to have bars at full turn when measuring.

You can then use the twine to pull the wires thru the bars, use a vacuum to get the twine into the bars.

http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/produc...d=2&store=Main is a good source for parts and Tech advice. Get their catalog (free), great wish book.

Good luck

I might tackle the task tomorrow if time permits. I do have the bars and yes, I agree that 8-10 over does seem to be to much. I've got the latest DK magazine but have not yet decided where I want to buy everything I need yet. Thanks for the advice and input.

Excellent advice!!

I'd like to see before, during and after pics of the install if you think about it. Might help future builders.

Just sayin'...

Since you have the bars; measure for the cables. When you buy the cables make sure you can exchange them for a different length, at no cost, size if need be.

I did the wire extensions myself. It's not hard at all and you know the lengths will be correct. I did a write up on the task here about ten threads down.

I'm gonna tackle the bars after Rolling Thunder. I'll try and take as much pics as possible. I've got two other bikes in the garage now and need the owners to pick them up so I've got room again so I can work on mine.

hey My Name Is Doug!
I just installed 12.5's on my flsti a few weeks back and I cant tell you how much i love 'em. What a difference it has made....that really should have been one of my first mods, instead of waiting almost a year before making the swap! Anyways, all my cable's that I ordered were 6"+ and they all fit fine as frog hair.

Just chiming in with my experience!

peace!
