Trailering

I've been looking at the option of pulling a trailer behind my EG. I've spent about two years looking at different models and hitches online and a few out on the road. After considerable thought, I've pretty much decided on this unit: http://www.tntmotocorp.com/

Both my bride and I like to camp, but I took a shoulder injury shoeing a horse this last spring and sleeping on the ground is pretty much out of the question anymore. I'm not really sold on the idea of pulling a trailer, but hate having a bunch of s*** hanging all over my bike rubbing paint off. Thought I could pack a small air mattress along and a cooler for drinks and goodies to fix for supper, etc. Different folks I've talked to who pull say after about 500 miles the different handling and braking becomes natural. And I thought if we got to a spot where it was nice to camp, we could unhook and take off to see the countryside, leaving the trailer at the spot. A Model T coil and small battery should take care of anyone nosy.

I know I need to think of a little better brakes up front, and have been keeping tabs on the parts sites and eBay for deals on Performance Machine, etc. LED lighting helps on the charging system, and the TNT folks I talked to say they can put those on from any source I want without putting the wood to me for expense.

Has anyone done any pulling and what do you think?

Do you get any motorcycle shows around your area? The Chicago show (us Doofs are going again this Feb.) has a ton of trailers on display.

Have you thought about a pop up tent trailer for your bike since you like camping?

I think pairofnines pulls a trailer.

WiBiker was talking of getting one. He may have friends that pull.

Spokane has one, as does Denver. We are hoping to make a trip down to Phoenix again this spring and make AZBikeWeek - my bride's dad has a small winter place in Fountain Hills. Just missed it last year. There's a small airline that flies into Mesa and offers ridiculously low fares. Something like $40 or $50 one way. About half scares me to think of what they may fly down there for that - wonder if I could get a 'chute through security...

I have looked at the tent trailers, but am thinking a little more on this order:

The MoCo and two or three others are offering configurations like this, and they pack down small. I'd rather have the shelter packed as just part of the load rather than the whole load. I have done a fair bit of horse packing in the mountains so I'm at least a little familiar about what works.

I'll look forward to what Nines has to say.

A trailer manufacotr was argueing that pulling a trailer was safer, cause you are not overloading the bike. But I still got to think in an emergency sittation, you are at a disadvantage with a trailer.

I've never pulled one, so don't know. Been curious.

What you really need to do is condion the misses to take less crap. You give her a trailer, your still gonna have issues where to put evrything.

You grow to the size of your tank.

Yup, talk to Pairofnines. He's done quite a bit of pullin trailers and just got a new one recently.

Have you checked out the single wheel models? They are supposed to be safer.

That tent is no good if you are pulling a trailer, there is no room for it.

Personally I would just use a quality backpacker's tent (the smaller the better), and a cover for the motorcycle. Plenty of choices on the tent. This has worked pretty well for me.

If you're pulling a trailer, there is really no need to cover it.
