Oil cooler

Here's one for duscission.

I was telling a friend that he might carry some hose to by pass the oil cooler on his '04 Ultra in case the cooler gets damaged by a rock and starts leaking.
I have seen rock rash on HD cooler fins and such.

He comes back with so what about the oil filter it's hanging out there in the open in about the same area.

Anybody ever hear or have a oil filter damaged to leakage on an FLH type HD?
I think the steel body of the filter can withstand some pretty good hits, but the right rock getting kicked up, hard to imagine.

The oil filter is tough, I can't imagine any rock punching a hole through it. I have cut them open before to look for metal filings, it takes a lot to get one open.

I've driven a screwdriver through one with a ball peen hammer. If you take a rock that hard, something else is probably already going seriously wrong too.

I have heard of, but not seen, clutch cables wearing through oil filters.

I carry hose, hose clamps, and the orginal base for the oil filter. I am anal, so I tape the ends of the hoses.

Besides the oil fitler, your screwed if your fuel line cracks. Have heard of, but not witnessed that too.

When I t-boned that gal at McDonalds, my oil filter got all screwed up.

That was the least of my worries at the time----and for a long time afterwards.

I'm running my oil through my highway bars. I carry some plugs to bypass the bars in case something happened to the bars.

Beserker, you're not anal. It is standard practice for aircraft mechanics to plug the ends of all lines when not in use.

I couldn't see anything like that ever happening with the big FLH fender up front.

That just means ALL aircraft mechanics are anal.

I am not an aircraft mechanic. I just don't like being on the side of the road.

on my FXR ..... hell the oil filter and voltage reg are hangin right out there in front of everything ..... just waiting ta get blasted by somin

8 years now, nothing has happed to either one of them ....

I don't carry spare parts .......... three reasons

1) I don't have a bagger

2) I have no idea which failure I might encounter and the odds would be that I'd have the wrong spare parts for whatever just went wrong .......

3) no bagger has enough room to carry one spare part for everything that could go wrong ...

where is your spare tube
where is your spare tire
where is your spare rim
where is your spare forks and sliders
where is your spare tranny
where is your spare computer
where is your laptop so you can reload SERT
where is your clutch cable
where is your throttle cable
where is your primary drive belt
where is your secondary drive belt
where is your whatcyamacallit
where is your ........ hell just name it man

I'm jus sayin' I get the idea of taking some of the basic spare parts with you ............ your chance of needing them (IMHO) is no greater than all the parts that you have to leave behind !!!!!!!!!

BTW ......... you also carry that chit with you in your cars/trucks ???

I used to carry some of that chit in my old trucks, but after 20 years of never needing it ,,,,,,,, I don't carry any of that stuff any longer

YMMV ............ jus sayin'
